Is Your Child Making The Jump To Preschool? 3 Tips That Will Help Them Be Prepared

Education & Development Blog

A big change in you and your child's life will be the adjustment from staying at home to going to preschool. With it being the first time that your child is away from you and their home, it can be quite the big adjustment for everyone involved. They'll be in an unfamiliar place for the first time without the comfort of their mom or dad being with them. These tips will help make the switch to preschool go smoothly:

Meet The Staff

You do not want the first day of preschool to be the first day you and your child meet the staff. Set up a meet and greet beforehand so that both you and your child can meet the staff that runs the daycare. You may know who your child's teachers will be, but it helps to put faces to the names so that you see familiar faces on the first day of school.

As a parent, a meeting will give you the opportunity to discuss your child's need with the staff before their first day. For example, you can relay in person any information about food allergies they may have. As a child, they will be able to check out the space, see what kind of toys there are to play with, and even meet some of the kids that will be in their class.

Talk To Your Child

The first visit will help give your child a better understanding of what preschool will be like. It may help them feel more at ease or cause them to have questions about what it will be like. It is a good time to talk to your child about their concerns.

Are they still afraid of attending preschool? Are they ready to be away from home during the day? Are they worried about making friends in a new environment? These are all things you can ask your child to find out what is wrong and help them feel ready for their first day.

Help Your Child Become Independent

Your child won't have their parents at preschool to help them with everything. It is a good idea to start allowing them to be more independent around the house to prepare them for what it will be like at school.

You can have your child get dressed on their own in the morning and start using the potty without supervision. They should be taking more independence about things they'll be responsible for on their own when they are at preschool.
